Hi everyone!
Today, we’re talking about another key part of getting your child ready for school — self-regulation and independence.
These are the skills that help children manage their emotions, stay focused, and do things on their own. They’re what allow children to learn, make friends, and feel confident in the classroom.
🧘♀️ Self-Regulation: Managing Feelings and Behaviours
Self-regulation is a big word, but it really just means helping children learn to pause, think, and make good choices.
You can help by talking about feelings and naming them — like, “I can see you’re upset because the tower fell down.”
Once they calm down, you might say, “Let’s take a deep breath and try again.”
Over time, they learn that they can handle frustration and find a way forward.
You can also teach calming tools — breathing exercises, stretching, or having a “quiet corner” where they can rest or read when they need space.
🌟 Building Independence
Independence comes from doing small things for themselves every day.
Encourage your child to dress themselves, tidy up toys, or help set the table.
It might take a little longer — but every time they do it, they build confidence and problem-solving skills.
Give them choices, too. Ask questions like, “Would you like the red jumper or the blue one?” Choices help children feel capable and responsible.
💬 Encouragement Matters
Remember, the goal isn’t perfection — it’s progress.
When your child tries something on their own, praise the effort, not just the result.
Say things like, “You kept trying, even when it was tricky!” That helps them stay motivated and proud of themselves.
So keep encouraging those small steps — from calming down after a big feeling to putting on their own shoes.
These everyday moments are what build resilience, confidence, and readiness for the next big step — starting school.
