This week we are beginning a new theme in our classroom, “Amazing Critters”. Children will learn about insects that crawl. They will learn interesting facts about these crawling creatures, including that some are pests and some are very hard workers. They will also learn how to determine if a creature is indeed an insect.
This week’s storybook is “Ants: Nature’s Busy Bodies”.
You can also do a math activity at home:
Encourage your child to model math word problems
using small objects to help show what happens when
two sets are put together.
Tell a simple story: Two insects are chewing on a leaf. The leaf is big enough to share, so they invite three friends to join them.
As you tell the story, place a small stone or if you are fancy toy insects on the table. Ask: How many insects are there in all? Count the objects together to show that there are five in all. Repeat, changing the number of insects with each new story.
