Children behave in ways that get attention from others. Providing lots of positive attention is a powerful way to teach children how to behave and to let our child know that you enjoy when he/she behave well. Praising children when they behave is also an important way to help children feel good about themselves.
Five steps to give positive attention:
Make positive attention specific. Tell your child exactly what he did that you liked. Billy, you picked up your toys! It makes me proud when you follow the rules.
Give positive attention right away:
Give your child positive attention while the good behavior is happening.
Avoid criticism. When your child learns something new/they need lots of positive attention.
Catch your child being good. Watch when our child is “being good” and praise them immediately.
Praise frequently. This allows your children to get used to how you sound when you are proud of something and to learn to work for it.
