We have the children sort a bag of conversation hearts based on color. Fill cups about a quarter of the way up with water – 1 cup for every color of conversation heart. The children can add the hearts into the cups of water – 1 color per cup. Have the children stir and dissolve the candies.We let the candies sit in the water for about an hour and a half. We kept our eyes on them as we continued our other activities.

As we watched them, we talked about any changes we noticed like the water changing colors. Once they sat for a good while , we then went back and discussed what happened as we stirred them. We discussed how the candy dissolved as well as what ‘dissolve’ means.
